This book is part of the Artemis Fowl series and is the 7th book.

Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls

A boy named Billy saves up to get 2 hunting dogs named Old Dan Little Ann. He goes on many adventures in the Ozark Mountains of Oklahoma, and Billy learns the real meaning of friendship between a hunter and his dogs.

Billy lives in the Ozark Mountains of Oklahoma, a hunting country. Billy yearns to own hunting dogs. So, he saves up his money to get 2 Redbone Coonhounds. He decides to name them Little Ann and Old Dan. Soon, Billy and his dogs become the greatest hunting team in the Ozarks. Through many remarkable nights of hunting and many close calls, they make it to the Hunting Championships. At the championships, Billy realizes how much his dogs mean to him, and how much he took them for granted.

This is a very heartfelt story about a boy and his dogs. I also think that there are several lessons you can learn from the characters. This book is good for all ages. It conveys a wide array of emotions from sadness to joy. The book is inspired by the author’s own childhood adventures. This book doesn’t contain action or any intense drama. But, the fact that this story could really happen in real life allows the reader to be transported to the moment. The author does a wonderful job with the detail. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys realistic fiction and a good book that makes you feel all warm inside.

Artemis Fowl and the Arctic Incident by Eion Colfer

Artemis Fowl is back and ready to go. Artemis’s mom has enrolled him in Sanit Bartelby’s school for young gentlemen. Butler (Artemis’s bodyguard) is not happy about this, he has already gotten himself banned from the school grounds. As for Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon, she has been demoted to chute duty after the Artemis Fowl affair. She is only staking out this particular chute because the B’wa Kell (a goblin gang) has some suspicious activity in this area. Eventually, after many stakeout hours and an attack the LEP figure out that the goblins have help from fairies and a human. Artemis Fowl around the same time received a mysterious email containing a video of his father. Artemis was still looking for his father since he believed that he was still alive. So Artemis knows he needs help from the fairies to get a hold of his father. And the fairies suspect that Artemis is the one helping the B’wa Kell, so the fairies and Artemis team up to solve both of their problems. These unlikely allies team up in Artemis Fowl and the Arctic Incident!

I really liked this book because it is a mix of mystery and fantasy. Also, the book is viewed from a first-person point of view, but we cycle between characters. I noticed that the old characters are kept but new characters are also introduced. I am actively reading this book in 5th grade. If you like this book you should consider checking out other books in the Artemis Fowl series.

Aru Shah and The End of Time by Roshani Chokshi

Aru Shah and the end of time is a book that involves a lot of Hindu mythology, so if you are interested in Hindu mythology or are Hindu yourself, this is a great book for you. The main character is a middle school girl named Aru Shah, she tells lies to fit in with the rest of the kids in her private school. It may seem that Aru Shah is a very naughty child but every kid at her school is going to the Maldives or hanging out at their beach house, except Aru. Aru’s mom is the curator at the Museum of Ancient Indian Art and Culture in Atlanta, Georgia. Aru grew up in the Museum just her mom and her, she grew up hanging her backpack on the stone elephant in the lobby, directing tours through the hall of gods, and staring at the supposedly cursed lamp at the end of the hall of gods. One afternoon some of Aru’s classmates turn up at the museum and expose Aru’s lies, so to prove her innocence she decides to light the cursed lamp, when she does she awakens the sleeper, who is an evil demon whose goal is to end time. So, Aru has to save time because she finds out that she is a Pandava, the Pandava brothers saved Kauravas who were being led by their cousin, Karna. Aru finds out that she is the soul daughter of the king of the gods, Indra. The other Pandava that was awakened was Mini, an over-cautious short middle schooler, Mini is the soul daughter of the god of death and justice Dharma Raja. Both of them receive an item from their soul fathers. Aru gets a glowing ball the size of a ping-pong ball and Mini gets a compact. Now both of them have to go on a quest to get 3 keys so that they can save the world, and they must do it with a guide who is a pigeon named boo. If you want to see how Aru Shah the middle school lier turns into Aru Shah the Savior of the world read Aru Shah and the End of Time!

I really enjoyed this book because of the way it is based on Indian mythology, it gives a modern twist to Indian mythology. The way that you can’t tell what’s going to happen next is also another reason I loved reading this. I also liked how everything in the book is connected. Once I started getting interested in this book I didn’t put it down, in fact, I was reading it while we were on vacation and I even read while we were diving to places. I also loved how it connects 2 periods of time that were nearly 3,000 years apart.

I just finished reading this book and I am in 5th grade right now. If you like this book you should consider checking out Keeper of the lost cities, the Artemis Fowl Series, Harry Potter. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I did.

Aru Shah And The End Of Time - (pandava) By Roshani Chokshi (hardcover) : Target

A Review for Keeper of the lost cities series

Shannon Messenger is the author of this series and the series has 8 books so far. I am not reviewing all the eight books and boring you with words. Instead, I am giving you a brief preview of what to expect. One of my all-time favorite book series is Keeper of the lost cities. The basic storyline revolves around a girl named Sophie who after an accident has acquired an ability to read minds. Sophie’s life is completely normal until a boy named Fitz comes to her school field trip and asks her if she can read minds. Sophie eventually decides to uproot her whole life and move to the lost cities. But, to move she must be erased from the minds of her family. Most people in the lost cities have special abilities, like being able to feel other people’s feelings, or being able to vanish for an amount of time. The lost cities consist of cities that are supposed to be fabled, most houses in the lost cities are hidden in places humans can’t reach. Sophie doesn’t realize that there is evil waiting for her and the series is about how she fights it. Along the way, Sophie gains friends and allies, like the black swan, Keefe, Biana, Dex, Tam, and Linh. She also gains powers because she is special in a way beyond her imagination. Join Sophie in her immersive journey to defeat the evil Neverseen by reading the Keeper of the Lost Cities!

I enjoyed this book because of how the world of Sophie just sprang up around you from the beginning . I didn’t want to put down the book. I also liked how the characters developed through the series. The author kept the book interesting by introducing new characters or a place or a new layer of the plot. So if you’ve just finished Harry Potter I would definitely recommend reading this book. I would classify this book as fantasy.

I am actively reading this book in 5th grade. If you enjoy this book I suggest you read the Morrigan Crow series, the Aru Shah Series (review coming soon), and of course, if you haven’t yet read Harry Potter after you finish this Series you should totally check it out.

Here is a fun fact: I tried out a cookie recipe from the book on a boring Sunday afternoon earlier this year and it was delicious!

The War that Saved my Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

The War that Saved my Life is a Newbery award winning book based during World War II. It is based in England. Ada, a 11 year old girl lives in a poor neighborhood in East London, . Ada has a clubfoot and is called a cripple by her mom. Ada’s Ada wants to be a normal girl that would help her mother with shopping, run around, and play with other kids but her mom mom is as mean as they come, she locks Ada in their one room flat, and never lets her come out. She slaps and puts her in the cupboard under the sink (a wretched cupboard) when she disobeys her orders. Jamie, Ada’s younger brother is completely normal, and gets to be normal. Ada was in charge of taking care of him until he was old enough to go outside and when he was old enough Ada was by herself for hours.

Soon, news came of hitler and World War II, and Ada decides to teach herself something very important- she decided to teach herself to walk. By the time they had to evacuate the children from London Ada could hobble. Ada’s mom is fine with Jamie leaving London but she is not letting Ada leave. So, Jamie and Ada escape from their mom and board a train full of evacuees (most of them children) going to Kent

In Kent, Ada and Jamie are placed under the care of Susan. Susan doesn’t want them at first but then she realizes how much she likes having them there, so Susan takes care of them. Susan treats both Ada and Jamie with kindness and care that their mom never showed. Susan takes efforts to fix Ada’s clubfoot and even teaches her to knit and read. There are a few other uplifting moments in the book that I don’t want to give away. The book ends with a big finish at the end which will definitely surprise you.

I really enjoyed this book because it was set during the second world war and it talked about life during the world war – air strikes, rationing, evacuation etc. I liked the way the author crafted the story and characters around the big ideas of power, friendship, kindness and freedom. This story is based off of something that happened in real life. I read this book first when I was in second grade but I read it again and I enjoyed it more the second time. I loved this book so much that I even suggested it to my dad who surprisingly listened to the whole book in a few days.

If you like this book then I would suggest reading the sequel called The War I Finally Won. That book is a continuation of Ada’s journey to find out who she is and what she wants to stand for. Also, if you like reading World War II books you should check out Wolf hollow, if you want to learn more about it click here.

Counting by 7’s by Holly Goldberg Sloan

Counting by 7’s is a book about a girl whose parents die in a car crash. This girl has to uproot her whole life and move in with a friend she just met. The girl’s name is Willow Chance. Willow is different, she is smart and I mean very smart.  She is very interested in plants and medical conditions. She goes to live with her friend Mai. Unfortunately, Mai lives in a garage. So they borrow an apartment from Mai and Willow’s counselor. This story shows how one tragic event can change your whole life. Depending on how you see the situation it can be good or bad. If you want to find out what happens next, go read Counting by 7’s today!

I like this book because it is entirely possible this could happen to some kid in real life. It also teaches life lessons like how not to take what you have for granted. This story has been given lots of life with the multiple different characters and how they either help Willow on her journey, or Willow helps them, or even both. The way this story highlights the struggles of an adopted child is what I love about this book the most. Hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did! 🙂

Ps. I read this at the age of 10 almost 11 🙂

Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk

I recently started enjoying book set in the 1900s and before. These books allow me to experience things that I will never experience. For example the World Wars. Wolf Hollow is based during the second world war. This is a story about standing up to bullies. Anabelle is a school age girl who lives in a small town in Pennsylvania. One day, a bully named Betty frollicks into her school, at first Betty troubles Anabelle but then Betty starts focussing her attacks on a worn world war I soldier named Toby. Eventually, Betty does serious attacks injuring people and she starts blaming Toby for these attacks. Anabelle sees Toby as a friend and is unable to tolerate Betty’s actions. Will she stand up and protect her friends, read the book !

Even though this book is set in the past, there could be bullies now. The book will help you to identify some of these actions that are troublesome and not only repeat them but also stand up to them.

Artemis Fowl 1 by Eion Colfer

Artemis Fowl II is supposedly a criminal mastermind. Artemis Fowl II is a 12 year old boy.

Artemis was born and raised in Fowl Manor near Dublin, Ireland. Artemis’s father was a collector and had mysteriously died when he was collecting something. This made Artemis’s mother Angelina sad and depressed. In an attempt to save the family fortune, Artemis along with his bodyguard Butler (Yes, the last name of the bodyguard was butler, in fact the fowls and the butlers have been working together for centuries) set out in search of fairies. Yes, in search of fairies!! Artemis had learned that the fairies that lived at the planet’s core held bars and bars of 24 carat gold. He told himself that even 1 ton of that stuff could revive their family’s fortune. So Artemis searched and searched and he eventually found a fairy that was strapped to the earth. I should mention that though Artemis was not very athletic. He made up for that in the field of electronics. Artemis could decode anything, hack into anything using a computer. And he put those skills to work when he received the sacred fairy book from the fairy which was tethered to earth. Artemis found out about a ritual that the fairies did to revive their powers. So, he decided to take advantage that ritual. The ritual could only happen (From what he could tell) on a full moon in some certain places. So, Artemis kept an eye on all of those places until one night, a fairy named Captain Holly Short came. Artemis captured Holly and effectively telling the fairies to come and get him. The fairies needed to stay hidden from the humans, and the fact that one of their own was captured agitated them. So the fairies struck Fowl Manor. To find out if the attack was effective or not, and what will happen to Captain Holly Short read The first Artemis Fowl Book!

I loved this book because it was hard to distinguish between the good and bad characters. Everyone seemed to be doing the right thing according to their situations. The setting of the story is along the coast of Ireland and it made think it was some really pretty place. I loved the way they created a world (lots of tech and science fiction) in which one person was trying to outsmart the other and both Artemis and their fairies seemed extremely smart. The book was really funny too.
